By 00:15, I needed a break from Tetris, so I just wandered about. There was more activity now, in the form of aircraft movements; flights to Cairns, Fiji and Sydney, and a later flight to Auckland. Those destinations took my mind back to when I was there! Whilst watching what was going on, I did a few stretching exercises and felt a 'click' in my back! Hopefully, that was the joint that had been giving me the back pain during the past few weeks! I still had a little discomfort, but my back was not as painful!

I checked in for Flight NZ054 at 02:00 and was allocated seat 08K. The flight will arrive from Rarotonga International Airport (on the Cook Islands). Half-an-hour later, I found somewhere to lie down and surprisingly, got an hour's sleep. At 03:30, I went to freshen-up (had a shave), then made my way to Gate 26. The flight (a Boeing 767) left Honolulu at 05:00. With Los Angeles (California) being 3 hours ahead of Hawaii, plus a flight time of 5 hours, we arrived at LAX at 13:00 local.

On the approach to the airport (in perfectly clear air), I was astounded to observe that the city was shrouded in a brown coloured haze (or smog)! Also, habitation extended from the north horizon to the south horizon! I had heard that the Los Angeles conurbation was large, but I didn't realise it was that extensive The aircraft then turned and descended into the 'pollution'! I thought "Yuk! I'm going to have to breathe in that Californian shit"!

Once clear of passport control, I boarded a shuttle bus C (to the Metro Bus Centre), from where I took a Big Blue Bus #3 to Santa Monica. I alighted at 4th Street/Broadway and walked to the Youth Hostel in 2nd Street (two streets away).

Once checked in, I was directed to Room 410, bunk D. It was a clean, well-organised hostel, with a TV room, a games room, a reading room, a laundry room and cooking/kitchen facilities. A notice board near reception listed a number of trips from the hostel. After unpacking, I went into town in search of a shop selling Game Boys, to buy additional games. There were two shops, but the selection of games wasn't the best. While I was out exploring, I had a Thai meal in the Santa Monica Mall.

I had to return to the hostel before 19:00, in order to meet a representative for a tour I had booked myself on (to Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon) for USD 179.00 (£116.99). Because I had chosen the Mon-Thu trip, I needed to call Canadian Airlines to change my flight (to Vancouver) to Saturday. That meant I was able to visit Universal Studios on Friday! While I was arranging my trips, I added my name to the list to visit Disneyland tomorrow. I paid my USD 100 (£65.36) deposit, showered, watched TV for a while, then went to bed at 22:30.

Saturday, 25 - Sep - 1993

Although my alarm was set for 07:15, I slept until 08:10! I must have been tired. I had a hostel breakfast (for USD 2.00) comprising cereal, a pastry and some orange juice. At 09:30, a group of us left for Disneyland (45 miles away), paying USD 15.00 to the driver. He told us that Los Angeles was 75 miles in length! That is almost the same distance between London and Bristol!

We arrived at Disneyland at 10:30. While queueing at the entrance, a group of Australians started celebrating! Sydney had been chosen to host the Olympic Games in 2000! I paid my USD 30.00 (£19.61) entrance fee and took the monorail to Tomorrow World. Once explored, I started walking along Main Street, to take the train around the site. I was surprised at the size of the complex; it was a lot smaller than I had imagined! Unfortunately, some of the rides were not working. During the afternoon, I visited a number of locations, including Mickey's Toontown, Frontier Land and Tom Sayer Island; as illustrated in the following photos.

There was a street parade at 17:00, that had an Aladdin theme (the following three photos), after which, I went and watched a stage production of Beauty and the Beast (from 18:00 to 18:30). After that, I walked back to Main Street and noticed that a lot of people had taken their place along the kerb, presumably getting ready for the Festival of Lights.

Joining the group from the hostel, we positioned ourselves at the railway-station-end of Main Street and waited for the procession to pass by.

At 21:00, the lights started going out and the Main Street Electrical Parade started (see the following four photos). It was spectacular, with all the main Disney characters: Micky and Minnie Mouse, and Snow White, etc. The parade finished at 21:35 and we made our way back to the Disneyland Hotel and waited until 22:00 for our lift back to the hostel. We arrived back in Santa Monica at 22:50 and by 23:00, I was in bed - knackered!

Sunday, 26 - Sep - 1993

I had a lie-in this morning, even though I had another nightmare - I was being chased by a tax man; he was after my life! I eventually left the hostel at 10:30 and walked to Santa Monica Boulevard to take a #4 bus to Downtown Los Angeles. [I was going to take a #434 bus, but the #4 route went along Santa Monica Boulevard to Beverly Hills and West Hollywood.] I arrived at Broadway at 12:30, all for the cost of USD 1.10 (£0.72).

A few shops had Game Boy games in them, but like Santa Monica, the selection was poor! What I did notice was that about 98% of the shoppers were of Mexican origin. For lunch, I had a Burger King "Double Whopper and Cheese Burger" and Sprite for USD 3.80 (£2.48); and very filling it was too! I left Downtown LA at 14:00 and arrived back at Santa Monica at 15:30. After freshening up, I set off for Venice Beach.

What a walk, but it was worth it. There were fortune tellers, palm readers, numerologists, etc. with their stalls, as well as shops selling cheap T-shirts and sweatshirts; but they were seconds! There were many people running, cycling and rollerblading. There was even an area for muscle men to show off! On my way back, I stopped at a stall to see how much body fat I had. [I think that is known today as Body Mass Index?] The measurement was 16%, an increase from 13% when I was working at S.W.I.F.T. (in La Hulpe, Belgium). Before leaving Venice Beach, I wanted to see a Califonian sunset. Much to my dismay, fog started rolling in from the sea! Therefore, I started walking back via the Santa Monica Pier, but there was not a lot to see.

Back at 4th Street, I stopped to get some cash from an ATM, but both my VISA cards were declined! Very strange and annoying, considering they worked last week in Hawaii! Back at the hostel, I freshened up and sorted out the clothes I needed for the trip to Las Vegas. I bumped into a guy by the name of Rich. He was offereing phone numbers that permitted cheap international calls to be made; one call for USD 10, multiple calls for USD 20. After thinking about it, I bought a USD 20 number, with the intention of trying it tomorrow to call the U.K.

Monday, 27 - Sep - 1993

I checked out of the hostel and dashed around to the post office to send a few postcards back to Europe. I saw an American Express office, where I changed a USD 100 travellers cheque into cash; no commission charge! On my way back to the hostel, I called Thatcham, using the 'magic number'! My ex-wife gave me first refusal of buying the house, as she wanted to move into a cottage. As much as I would have liked to, in my then situation, I could not afford it.

I arrived back at the hostel at 10:00 and joined the group for Las Vegas. We only had to wait a few minutes before the minibus arrived. There was 13 of us, excluding Nick (our driver). We left at 10:15.

We had a lunch stop (salad) at 12:15. At 12:50 (20:50 CET) using the 'magic number', I called Linda (one of 'the crowd' in Bruxelles). She was pleasantly surprised to hear from me. If I wanted to, she offered to put me up upon my return to Europe. She had recently lost her job, and the car that went with it! I then called Peter. He suggested I look for a Game Boy cartridge that contains up to 150 games!

We arrived at Las Vegas (Nevada) at 15:30 and once checked in, I headed for the pool for a while, to cool off. At 17:45, I called my cousin Leslie in Toronto. She said that Suzanne (her daughter) was no longer living with her. The two of them had had a bust up! I said I'd call her again when I had arrived in Vancouver.

At 18:30, we all went for something to eat at Maim's; all you can eat and drink (soft drinks only) for USD 5.30 (£3.46). We decided to meet at 20:00 for a tour of Las Vegas. Our driver took us along "The Strip" to see the lights. At 21:30, we parked and made our way over to see the Erupting Volcano at the Mirage Hotel (Photo US-025), then it was into Caesar's Palace, in time to see the Show of the Gods (at 22:00), and finally to O'Sheas at 22:30, where we were given a 'Fun Book'.

I changed USD 20 into 80 x 25 cent coins for the slot machines. I used 40 of the coins (USD 10) before changing USD 2 into 5 cent coins. Much to my surprise, free cocktails were offered to all players, so I requested a Harvey Wallbanger (or three)! I watched a guy playing Roulette. He won four times by betting on Number 2 (with odds of 35:1!).

Nick left at 23:30, while most of us stayed. We left O'Sheas at about midnight (with me carrying my fourth Harvey Wallbanger!) and ended up at the Flamingo Hilton (Photo US-026). After wandering around (past more slot machines), I came across a dice table. I started talking to the stick man (croupier). He was very helpful in explaining what was happening. I then started talking to an American girl player. She actually helped me start playing my first attempt at Craps, by giving me USD 5. At one point, I was about USD 50 up, when I should have stopped! In the end, I was about USD 10 down on the night; after having had six (free) Harvey Wallbangers!

Tuesday, 28 - Sep - 1993

Even though I eventually got back to the hotel at 03:30, I was up again at 06:45! We left the hotel at 08:15, bound for the Grand Canyon. Lunch was at Hurricane (Utah) before continuing on to Jacob Lake (Arizona), where we stopped at the Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge. Some of us decided to explore part of the North Kaibab Trail (Photo US-027), then it was back to the lodge for a few more photographs, before participating in a champagne sunset (Photo US-038) - or was it sparkling white wine - at sunset? At 19:00, we left for our next overnight stop: Room 38 at the Mission Inn (now known as the Royal Inn) at Kanab (Utah).

I was up at 07:15 for breakfast (toasted English muffins and orange juice) and time for a couple of photographs: Photo US-039 and Photo US-040.

We left Kanab at 08:30, bound for Bryce Canyon. After passing the Red Canyon, we arrived at our destination at 10:15. We spent approximately a hot hour-and-a-half walking through the canyon, along the Navajo Loop Trail. What an impressive location! I thought Bryce Canyon was much more impressive than the Grand Canyon! However, with the erosion that is going on, I wondered how much longer some of the pillars would last. The highest point in the canyon is at 2,468 metres (8,100 feet) above mean sea level.

We had lunch (pizza and Sprite) at a lodge, before heading back to Las Vegas at 14:00. We stopped briefly at the town of Bryce, and for 15 minutes at St. George, where I bought a milkshake from Burger King.

We arrived at the Las Vegas Town Hall Hotel and Casino at 18:15, where I was allocated Room 2021; on my own again. I immediately went to the swimming pool to cool down. A few of us thought we could get some beer and drink it around the pool. However, at 20:50, most of us left for Maxim's; we were feeling hungry. I had fish and pasta, beef and turkey, lemon meringue pie with fresh fruit salad, after which, I was completely full!

Some of us arranged to meet at 22:30 around the Craps tables in the Flamingo Hilton. I wasn't very successful at the slot machines and at the Craps table, but I was successful in having two free Cognac and Dry Ginger drinks! I left for the Imperial Palace (via viewing the front of the Excalibur Hotel (Photo US-054)) to meet other members of the group. I had a few pulls at the 5 cent slot machines and had two more cognacs. Not being an avid gambler, for the overall evening's entertainment, I was about USD 10 down, but four Cognacs up! I headed back to the hotel at 01:15.

Thursday, 30 - Sep - 1993

I awoke at 08:45. The news was that we were leaving at 11:00 instead of 12:00. Our first stop was at the Hard Rock Cafe, where I bought an embroidered sweatshirt. Some time later, on the Interstate 15 road, we passed the Mojave Desert (at the head of Death Valley), with some interesting mirages, and the sign for Zzyze Road! At 14:00, we arrived at Barstow, where we stopped for lunch. On again, and some of the sights that we saw included a dust devil when we crossed the state border into California, a sign pointing to the 'famous' Route 66, and (huge) camper vans towing cars!

We arrived back at the Santa Monica hostel at 17:45. I checked in for two nights and added my name to the list for visiting Universal Studios tomorrow. After freshening up, I carried out some domestic chores. I called the Vancouver Youth Hostel (at 19:20) and made a reservation for Saturday night. The 'group' arranged to meet in the foyer at 21:00, but that time came and went, so I ended going for a pizza and Sprite in 3rd Street with Jackie; she wanted to come along for a drink. We got back to the hostel at 22:50, when I was given back my Fiji book from Kerry. At 23:45 I went and searched for a street phone. Unfortunately, my 'magic number' didn't work; neither did my VISA credit card number! I ended up making a collect call to the U.K.

Friday, 01 - Oct - 1993

I awoke at 07:30 and went for breakfast, but it was not being served that morning. Therefore, I went to McDonalds for a Big Breakfast and orange juice for USD 3.50 (£2.29), plus 2 x USD 8 vouchers for use at Universal Studios. Back at the hostel, the minibus arrived at 09:00, and we arrived at the studios at 09:45. I headed straight for the Back to the Future ride; finally getting in at 10:30. It was very good!. After that, I went down the escalator to E.T., then to Backdraft, and The World of Cinemagic (with special effects). I jumped onto a tram for a ride around the site. Then in order, I watched the Star Trek Adventure (at 14:10), Adventures of Conan (at 15:30), the Wild, Wild, Wild West Stunt Show (at 16:20), and finally Miami Vice Stunts (at 17:00).

The minibus left the studios just before 18:00 and we arrived back at the hostel at 18:35. I went and located the bus stop (in 4th Street) for the #3 bus to the airport, then disappeared into Santa Monica Place, where I had Chow Mein, Almond Chicken and Pork at the Wok Inn. I was beginning to get low on US dollars (which was good in one respect). I returned to 3rd Street for a last look. By this time (20:45), various acts had appeared; jugglers, unicyclists, silent comedians and (aerosol) spray painters - very simple, but very effective (Photo US-062)! I got back to my hostel room at 21:50, sorted out my bags and clothing for tomorrow and was in bed forty minutes later.

Saturday, 02 - Oct - 1993

I, and others in the room, were woken at 01:30 by some (Swiss) imbecile, demanding that he had the lower bunk, by turfing out it's occupants! The other room occupants started saying "Sort yourselves out and stop waking everybody up!" and "Go and sort it out downstairs!"

I awoke again at 07:00, was showered and checked out by 07:50, and made my way to the bus stop in 4th Street. The fare was 50 cents; I had 53 cents in coins! The bus arrived at 08:30 and arrived at the LAX Transit Centre at 09:10. At check-in, I was asked to pay USD 25 because I had changed the date of my flight!

"Nothing was mentioned to me at the time" I told the check-in girl.
"Do you want me to check with the supervisor" she asked.
"Yes please" I said.
The supervisor waived the fee; "Everything is OK".

I walked to Gate 121 and waited to board CP 504 (Seat 17D on a Boeing 737). I thought: I shall be pleased to leave this smog! We left the gate at 11:25 for the 2½ hour flight to Vancouver. As we flew over them, the girl sitting at the window pointed out Yosemite National Park and Mount St. Hellen to me.
